Waverly’s Jaden Sutton broke off a 63-yard touchdown in last week’s loss, and it was voted the LSJ high school video of the week.

Jaden Sutton has had a knack for making big plays for the Waverly Warriors this season.

The senior tailback, who has 850 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns so far this year, has a handful of 50-plus-yard scores, and his most recent came last Friday in a loss to Lake Fenton.

In the second quarter, Sutton jolted through the heart of his offensive line before bouncing outside and running away for a 63-yard touchdown run. The score was voted the LSJ high school video of the week.

“Being a senior, I just want to be a playmaker and a guy our team can depend on,” said Sutton, who also has five receiving touchdowns and 422 receiving yards as a senior. “It’s been a bigger year for me as a receiver. I wanted to (dominate) defenses anyway I could.”

Sutton has been a bright spot on a Waverly squad that has failed to post a winning record for the fourth consecutive season. The Warriors nearly pulled off a season-opening victory over the Lansing Catholic Cougars, who are currently ranked sixth in Division 5, but fell short after leading most of the game.

The senior said his team “has the tools and athleticism” to be better than its 2-6 record, but added that Waverly was unable to finish games.

“If you watch the Lansing Catholic game, we were up most of the game,” he said. “We just couldn’t put them away. I feel like if we beat them our season would have made a different turn. I think us losing to Catholic just killed our confidence, and it went down from there.”
