Meet the 2016 LSJ girls swimming and diving Dream Teams.

SWIMMER OF THE YEAR FINALISTS

Freyja Garbaccio (Okemos sr.): Garbaccio won the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke at the CAAC Blue meet. The 400-yard freestyle relay team she was a part of placed second at the league meet. The senior finished third in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley at the Division 2 state meet. She was also a part of Okemos’ 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed second at states and the 400 free relay team that finished eighth.

Lola Mull (Grand Ledge fr.): The freshman won the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle and was a member of two relay teams that were victorious at the CAAC Blue meet. At the Division 1 state meet, Mull placed third in the 500 free and sixth in the 200 free.

Rita El Jbeily (Waverly jr.): El Jbeily won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle at the CAAC Red meet. The junior was also a part of the Warriors’ two relay teams (200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle) that were victorious at the league meet. El Jbeily placed ninth in the 100 free and 10th in the 50 free at the Division 2 state meet.

SWIMMING DREAM TEAM

Rachel Ely (St. Johns sr.): Ely won the 50 free and 100 free at the CAAC Blue meet. Her 200 medley relay team captured first place at the league meet and her 200-yard freestyle relay team placed third. The senior grabbed a top-15 finish in the 100 free at the Division 2 state meet.

Sarah Williams (Okemos sr.): Williams placed second in the 50 free and 100 free at the CAAC Blue meet. She helped the Chiefs’ 400 free relay team  and the 200 medley relay team finish second at the league meet, as well. The senior grabbed a top-15 finish in the 50 free at the Division 2 state meet and was also a part of Okemos’ 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed second and the 400 free relay team that finished eighth.

Emma Schaefer (St. Johns sr.): Schaefer won the 200-yard individual medley and placed third in the 100 butterfly at the CAAC Blue meet. The senior also helped the 200 medley relay team grab a first-place finish and contributed to the 200 free relay team’s third-place finish. Schaefer placed 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke and grabbed a top-15 finish in the 200 IM at the Division 2 state meet.

Katie Thomas (Grand Ledge sr.): Thomas placed second in the 200 free and 500 free and was a part of the winning 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams at the CAAC Blue meet.

Avalon Jones (Holt fr.): The freshman finished third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 butterfly at the CAAC Blue meet. Jones helped the 200 free relay team place second and the 400 free relay team finish third at the conference meet.

Grace Weston (Grand Ledge fr.): Weston placed second in the 200 IM, fourth in the 100 backstroke and helped the 400 free relay team win the CAAC Blue meet. She was also a member of the 200 medley relay team that took fourth at the league meet.

Sydney Shipps (DeWitt jr.): The junior finished second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 IM at the CAAC Blue meet. Shipps contributed to a fourth-place finish for the 400 free relay team and a fifth-place finish for the 200 free relay team.

Emma Cornell (Grand Ledge jr.): Cornell placed third in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free at the CAAC Blue meet. She was a part of the 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams that were victorious at the league meet.

Evelyn Vandemark (Alma sr.): Vandemark helped the Panthers’ 200 medley relay team grab a top-15 finish at the Division 3 state meet. The senior placed fourth in the 500 free and 12th in the 200 free at states, as well.

Abigail Ford (Grand Ledge so.): The sophomore finished second in the 100 breaststroke and sixth in the 200 IM at the CAAC Blue meet. Ford contributed to the Comets’ first-place finish in the 200 free relay and fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay at the league meet.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Marty Pohl (Holt)

DIVER OF THE YEAR FINALISTS

Mary Phillips (East Lansing so.): Phillips won the 1-meter diving title at the CAAC Blue meet.

Eve Petrie (East Lansing jr.): Petrie finished second in the 1-meter diving event at the CAAC Blue meet. She grabbed a top-20 finish at the Division 2 state meet.

Natalie Crandell (Williamston/Lansing Christian sr.): Crandell won the 1-meter diving title at the CAAC Red meet. She finished 15th at the Division 3 state meet.
